On Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony, led by guest conductor Nancy Menk, will perform the first concert of the 2016-17 June H. Edwards Chamber Series. This Season’s SBSO Chamber concerts feature a number of collaborations that greatly enhance the performances and create opportunities for local arts organizations to join forces with the SBSO.
Nancy Menk, Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities, and Chair of the Music Department at Saint Mary’s, will take the podium to lead the SBSO in the rarely performed full-version of Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella ballet. The SBSO, along with the guest soloists, will illustrate through sound and voice the ballet’s whimsical plot, “from lively dances, to playful brass outbursts, to the delicate singing of the oboe.” (Robert Simon)
The program’s second work is C.P.E. Bach’s Symphony in F Major. This three movement symphony highlights the talents of the SBSO players as it progresses through passages of loud, contrasting music followed by slower, softer phrases, ultimately ending with a rapid, chipper movement.
The concert will conclude with the Orchestra and South Bend Chamber Singers performing Vivaldi’s triumphant Gloria. The ensemble of 32 select singers from the Michiana Area, which won the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, will bring Vivaldi’s masterful writing to life in conjunction with the dramatic sound of the full orchestra and soloists.
The June H. Edwards Chamber Series is generously sponsored by Jack M. Champaigne. The concert is Sponsored by Tuck Langland.
