Renowned violinist and South Bend Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Zofia Glaushauser joins the orchestra for the first installment of the June H. Edwards Chamber Series Sunday, October 25 at 2:30 p.m. at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

Glaushauser was classically trained on the violin in Krakow, Poland, before migrating to the United States to study music under the tutelage of Renata Knific at Western Michigan University, and later at Northwestern University under Almita Vamos. In addition to being the concertmaster for South Bend Symphony Orchestra and the assistant concertmaster at the Northwest Indiana Symphony, Glaushauser also maintains a private studio and teaches violin at the University of Notre Dame.

She will perform Max Bruch’s strong yet soothing Violin Concerto, which is one of the most popular works of the violin repertoire. The concerto was the German romantic composer’s first work.

The concert will culminate with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s lighthearted Symphony No. 8. Beethoven began composing Symphony No. 8 during the summer of 1812, but did not count the playful piece as complete until four months later. Although this particular piece is referred to as the “little” symphony, it has been said that Beethoven thought this playful and intimate work was superior to his other symphonies. Nobel Prize winning playwright George Bernard Shaw agreed with Beethoven’s assessment, writing, “the Eight is much better [than the Seventh Symphony].”

SBSO’s Principal Clarinet, Trevor O’Riordan, will be prominently featured throughout Symphony No. 8. O’Riordan is adjunct faculty at Wheaton College as well as principal clarinet for the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He has won both the Eastman’s John Celentano Award for Excellence in Chamber Music and the International Clarinet Association’s Orchestra Audition Competition.

Tickets are $35 and are on sale at The DeBartolo Box Office, by phone at 574.631.2800 or online at www.PerformingArts.ND.edu. Tickets also can be purchased at Hammes Bookstore/Eddy Street Commons, O’Brien Recreation Center and TG Music in Goshen.  Tickets for full-time students are always $8 with photo ID.
