SOUTH BEND, In. (November 6, 2019) – This Saturday, November 9th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 10th at 2:30 p.m. at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra presents a program of old and new favorites as the second concert of the 2019-20 Jack M. Champaigne Masterworks Series and the first concert of the June H. Edwards Mosaic Series.  Joining the orchestra is world-renowned violinist Ilya Kaler performing Vivaldi’s iconic violin concerto, The Four Seasons.

Ilya Kaler has been revered as “an explosive virtuoso who assaults the ears and compels with his sheer fluency” by BBC Music Magazine and is the only violinist in the world to win the Gold Medal at three of the world’s most prestigious international violin competitions: the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1986), the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki (1985), and the Paganini Competition in Genoa (1981).  He has collaborated with conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Dmitri Kitayenko, Marias Jansons, and Jerzy Sernkow.

The first half of the program consists of Vivaldi’s timeless violin concertos The Four Seasons which has survived more than 60 years of resounding popularity in concert halls all over the world.  Each of the four concerti are based on one season.  The second half of the program starts with a piece by Grammy-nominated composer, Missy Mazzoli deemed as “one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York.”  Her piece Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), is a piece in the shape of a solar system – a collection of rococo loops that twist around each other within a larger orbit.  Ending the concert is a ballet suite by Spanish composer Manuel De Falla, El Amor Brujo.  This one-act ballet depicts two gypsies in love and their adventures in love, death, exorcism, and release.

This concert is made possible by the generosity of Series sponsor, Jack M. Champaigne , Concert Sponsor, The Everett-Rose Family, and Guest Artist-Underwriter, McDonald Physical Therapy.

In addition to this concert, there will be a masterclass with Ilya Kaler on Friday, November 8 from 4:30 – 6:00 PM at the LaBar Recital Hall in the O’Neill Hall of Music at the University of Notre Dame.  This class will feature three violin students in the area who will be coached by Professor Kaler.  For more information on the masterclass, please call the South Bend Symphony Office at (574)232-6343.
