SOUTH BEND, In. (March 15 2019) – The sparkling city of Paris and a mass in the time of war – on Sunday, March 24th at 2:30 p.m. at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, the South Bend Symphony will perform the final concert in its 2018-19 June H. Edwards Mosaic Series in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the another musical giant of the South Bend community, The South Bend Chamber Singers. The performance will feature both the South Bend Chamber Singers and your SBSO with the works Mozart, Haydn, and a highly imaginative young composer Jake Runestad.

The South Bend Symphony Orchestra Music Director Alastair Willis will share the podium with guest conductor and leader of the Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk. Together, the musical duo will navigate a plethora of works from accapella choir pieces to “a mass in time of war” from the desk of the beloved Classical composer, Joseph Haydn. The concert will start off with a contemporary work in the style of Mozart by Jake Runestad. In his Ave Verum, Runestad connects with the humanity within the genius of Mozart’s music. Immediately following Runestad’s Mozartian masterpiece is a work by the master himself – Mozart’s Symphony No. 31 “Paris.” The Parisian symphony depicts Mozart’s conflicted experiences with the French capital.

After intermission, the SBSO and Chamber Singers take on Haydn’s Paukenmesse – also known as “Mass in the Time of War.” Written while the Napoleonic wars were raging through Europe, and the looming threat of a French invasion of Austria, Haydn’s prayerful mass depicts the turbulent atmosphere of a war-ridden Europe.

The Maestro and the guest artists will host a Prelude Conversation one hour prior to the performance on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. These
pre-concert talks are the perfect opportunity to ask our musical experts questions!

This concert is made possible by the generosity of Series Sponsor Jack M. Champaigne.
