The SBSO kicks off the New Year with the second concert of the Beethoven Cycle.
Your South Bend Symphony starts 2019 with a stellar combination of Beethoven and contemporary composers Gabriela Lena Frank and Osvaldo Golijov.

SOUTH BEND, In. (January 4, 2019) – On Sunday, January 13, 2019 the South Bend Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Alastair Willis presents the second concert of a three season-long Beethoven cycle that pairs each Beethoven symphony with works of contemporary composers who, in Maestro Willis’ words, “could one day become the ‘Beethoven’ of our time.”

The concert starts with Last Round by Osvaldo Golijov – a piece that was heavily influenced by the death of the last great Tango composer, Astor Piazzolla. Golijov said that the two-movement piece was “conceived as an idealized bandoneon,” and serves as a sublimated tango dance for orchestra. Watch the orchestra battle through the passion and balance of the piece that will leave you longing for warm summer nights in Buenos Aires. Following the spirited start of the concert is Gabriela Lena Franks’ Leyendas; An Andean Walkabout. Originally written for string quartet, this multi-movement piece depicts the ancient instruments, and cultural aspects of the Incan and Andean people.

“An Andean Walkabout…draws inspiration from the idea of mestizaje…where cultures can coexist without the subjugation of one by the other…this piece mixes elements from the western classical and Andean folk music traditions.” -Gabriela Lena Frank

Moving from South America to 19th century Germany, the second half of the concert features Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 21. The second of nine symphonies was written during a dark time in Beethoven’s life, but still thrives with the personality and beauty that one would expect from a Beethoven Symphony.

This concert is made possible by the generosity of Series Sponsor Jack M. Champaigne.
