On Thursday, November 17th and Friday, November 18th, the South Bend Symphony will perform four concerts for over 5,500 area elementary school students titled Sound Waves – an exploration of the connections between music and science. There will be two performances on each day, at 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., at the Morris Performing Arts Center and all are welcome to join for any of these interactive concerts!
With Guest Conductor Steve Ingle on the podium, the South Bend Symphony will perform exciting works by Copland, Grainger, Haydn, Khachaturian, John Williams, and more! Familiar tunes such as The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme); Molly on the Shore; Plink, Plank, Plunk; and the Olympic Fanfare and Theme will all be featured! Each piece has been specifically selected for its uniquely scientific form. Additionally, these works correlate directly to the teacher materials, which include study guides, activities, and reference links. These materials have been prepared specifically for these concerts, distributed to area school teachers, and will be made available to all who attend the concert. The teacher materials are designed for both music and regular classroom use and meet the Indiana and Michigan academic standards for science.
Science concepts to be covered throughout each of the concerts include: forces and interactions, engineering design, waves: light and sound, structure and properties of matter, and energy. Each of the four concerts will be guided on stage by the South Bend Symphony Director of Education Christina Gibson.
