The South Bend Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Alastair Willis, is Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan’s premier professional orchestra. Presenting 20 orchestral concerts and more than 50 free ensemble performances each year, the SBSO is widely regarded as one of the finest regional orchestras in the US. An AFM and EMA signatory, the SBSO employs more than 65 musicians on a per-service contract. A typical orchestral season includes five Masterworks, three Pops, three chamber orchestra concerts, two Holiday Pops, and annual MLK Jr. Day and summer community concerts.
Highlights from the COVID years have included Octet, an immersive audio experience; A Juneteenth Celebration, an hour-long television special using music to explore South Bend in the Civil Rights Era; and Pops at the Field, a series held at South Bend’s beautifully renovated minor league baseball stadium. With a supportive board and a sizeable endowment, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra is financially stable and enthusiastic about the future.
About South Bend:
South Bend is a diverse community of doers. Those who enjoy peaceful rural scenes, vast beaches, vibrant downtowns, and safe, family-friendly neighborhoods will find plenty to love in the region, and all just a short drive or train ride away from everything Chicago has to offer. Residents enjoy access to amenities such as Lake Michigan beaches, bike trails, a burgeoning local culinary scene, minor league baseball, theaters, and a zoo, not to mention the cultural, sporting and community activities associated with Notre Dame and the other five colleges and universities. Perhaps the most amazing amenity of all is the remarkably low cost of living!
