Janet Hines-Norris, Soloist

Entertaining audiences with her strong, soulful voice that can hush an audience with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” one minute then kick them into jazz-boogie overdrive with “Route 66” the next has been Hines-Norris’ calling since she was a young girl in South Bend singing in church choirs and school ensembles.

There was gospel, and there were influences from a number of great singers, such as Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, all of whom traveled in spirit with Hines-Norris when she took off for Los Angeles in 1980 with her twin sister and spent five years pursuing a singing career as she performed lead and background vocals in theaters, clubs and other music venues.

By 1985, Hines-Norris returned to South Bend and reconnected with her music mentor, Willie Coates Jr. Since then, her voice has been heard at church worship services, conferences, political events, concerts, weddings and corporate events that have taken her to some of biggest music venues around the country and abroad to Cancun, the island of Haiti and London on two separate occasions.

Lift Ev’ry Voice – James Weldon Johnson

Lift Ev’ry Voice – James Weldon Johnson

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise

High as the listening skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,

Bitter the chastening rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,

Have not our weary feet

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,

We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,

Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,

Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;

Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,

Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;

Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,

True to our native land.

God Bless America – Irving Berlin

God Bless America – Irving Berlin

God bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains to the prairies
To the oceans white with foam
God bless America, my home sweet home
God bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains to the prairies
To the oceans white with foam
God bless America, my home sweet home
From the mountains to the prairies
To the oceans white with foam
God bless America, my home sweet home
God bless America, my home sweet home

Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Harold Arlen

Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Harold Arlen

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There’s a land that I’ve heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That’s where you’ll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can’t I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can’t I?
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There’s a land that I’ve heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That’s where you’ll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can’t I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can’t I?
