From Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Swans” and Saint-Saëns’ elegant “The Swan,” to the charming antics of Respighi’s “The Hen” and Mussorgsky’s “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks,” young listeners and seasoned concertgoers alike will be swept into a vibrant orchestra menagerie. Audiences will also enjoy characterful excerpts from Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 that highlight the instruments of the orchestra with humor and heart. About Naima Burrs
Naima Burrs, a violinist and conductor from Richmond, Virginia, has built a dynamic career as both performer and educator. As a violinist, she has appeared with ensembles including the Richmond Symphony, Roanoke Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, and Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, and has held leadership roles as principal second violin with Opera on the James and concertmaster of Summer Garden Opera. Her conducting training includes the prestigious Domaine Forget International Music Festival, where she studied with Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
In 2022, Burrs was appointed Music Director of the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, completing two celebrated seasons. She currently leads the University of Richmond Symphony Orchestra, where she also serves on the faculty, and is Director of Orchestral Activities at Virginia State University. Recent highlights include conducting debuts with the Richmond Symphony, Richmond Ballet, and National Philharmonic, where she was appointed Youth Concert Conductor in 2023. During the 2024–25 season, she appeared with the South Bend Symphony, Richmond Symphony, and National Philharmonic in mainstage performances. Burrs holds degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the Catholic University of America.
