South Bend, IN — On January 15, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, will present Celebration for a King, a powerful community concert honoring the life, legacy, and enduring vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Guided by Dr. King’s call to unity, justice, and hope, the program invites the community to gather in reflection and celebration through the shared experience of music.
The South Bend Symphony String Quintet will perform a selection of African American spirituals, including Deep River and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, alongside excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches. The concert will also feature Jambo, and Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho, culminating in a stirring finale with choral selections performed by the Community Choir under the direction of Turrell O’Neal, Choir Director.
“This concert creates space for our community to come together—to reflect, to listen, and to find unity in both the music and Dr. King’s message,” said Dr. Marvin Curtis, South Bend Symphony Orchestra Board Member. “It honors our shared history while calling us forward toward a more just and compassionate future.”
The South Bend Symphony Orchestra is proud to collaborate with Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, with the support of Rev. Andre’ A. McGhee, Pastor, in presenting this meaningful event and ensuring that Dr. King’s legacy continues to inspire across generations.
